Where were we in 2005? Probably listening to the distant rumble of a chaotic new century approaching, while playing on a PlayStation2. Consoles wars raged - and our wildest dreams could only be portrayed using a bunch of blurry pixels and 32MB of RAM. But music in video games has always pushed against these limits, and sounds were already melting with pixels to create a deep feeling of embodiment.

In 2005 Michael Manning, now an established audio director in the video games industry, was publishing his first album on Ai Records, the now-defunct cult UK label ( 'Ai ' stood for 'Area Info' - take that, GPT). It took 18 years (!) for Michael to return to publishing music - that is, music without games: in all those years, he has been working relentlessly on weaving together sounds and pixels as a composer, sound designer and audio director in various studios. We are very proud to release Michael's second full-length album, called Knots, on SØVN records at the end of September 2023.

The Wire, back in 2005, described Michael's music as following a fundamental principle - "don't do anything dumb". And this trait definitely carries on to Knots: this is wise music, full of empathy and emotional depth, hidden behind a stunning simplicity. It's the same feeling one may experience after watching one of Yasujiro Ozu's masterpieces: it does not come as a surprise, then, that Japanese New Age music from the 1980s was a major inspiration behind Knots.

In Michael's words, "Knots is an album that explores many spaces, it is made up of various small ideas that try to convey a feeling of travelling. Music and natural sounds are blended to create an abstract space, featuring field recordings from Malta and the UK, as well as sounds by recordist Daan Hendriks. Each track was performed and recorded live to tape, and then later arranged digitally". Just like Ozu’s well-known film, it’s music for the end of summer.
