Queimada is an Italian music composer and sound engineer based in Copenhagen, whose strongly synthetic aesthetics, based on melted-down samples and field recordings, was showcased both in solo releases on Gin & Platonic and Rest Now!, and in a longstanding collaboration with Taiwanese sound artist Sabiwa, from the collective Chinabot.
In Mi Piel, his latest EP, a different direction is taken: percussive sounds are left to the side, or at least they are kept under the surface, and a stronger focus is put on the interaction of grains and drones. And the nature of this interaction, despite its apparent meditative form, is confrontational. Under this light, the emergence of the EP's sound architectures is due to particles shattering, sculpting one another by collision and violent fragmentation - a form of coexistence and creation.
The EP opens with 'Sorridi', which lays bare the foundations of Queimada's latest work - grains falling from everywhere, against a thick field recording and dreamy drones.
'Iseeu' plays around with distortion and repetition, whereas Dream Catcher does all the title says - striking an eerie balance between soft pads and industrial screeches.
Closing the EP, 'Epidermide' and 'Mi Piel' describe skin as a fabric in two complementary ways - first, navigating it as a sea of infinite connections around the body, and then as the source and destination of all sensations, desires, collisions with the world around us.
The EP comes as a limited edition cassette, the outcome of a joint work with Archivio Tipografico, printed using fluorescent inks, and with a custom typeface by Aurora Stefanini.
